In 2018, Auroville Design Consultant initiated the “HUMANSCAPES HABITAT,” an innovative research and demonstration project aimed at fostering sustainable and integrated urban living. This endeavor represents a crucial step towards addressing the pressing global challenges of energy consumption and climate change. By establishing a benchmark in habitat development, the project seeks to promote a harmonious and sustainable model of urban development.
Sustainable Development Goals
The Humanscapes Habitat project encompasses a mixed-use development comprising residences, community spaces, and workspaces, serving as a touchstone for low-embodied energy building standards. A key objective is to enhance skill development and upgrade capabilities in India’s construction sector, transitioning from high-embodied energy materials to those that reduce carbon footprint, aligning with India’s commitment to the IPCC.
Sustainable Practices
Utilizing local building materials and expertise, the project aims to create net energy-positive residences, generating renewable energy on-site. It emphasizes zero-discharge of water, solid waste reduction and recycling, drought-resistant landscaping with local endemic species, and organic food cultivation for urban agriculture. Integration of work and living spaces, along with the adoption of clean mobility options like e-vehicles, minimizes point-to-point travel, fostering a sustainable campus environment.
Integrated Goals
The project integrates four key goals:
- Sustainable Built Environment: Employing solar passive building envelopes, efficient space usage, and low embodied energy materials, the project prioritizes climatic suitability and minimizes energy consumption.
- Integrated Environmental Planning: Zero-discharge water systems, solid waste reduction, water-efficient landscaping, and organic food cultivation underscore the commitment to holistic environmental stewardship.
- Human Ecology: Embracing the principles of cohousing, the project fosters neighbor interaction, promoting inclusive social, economic, and environmental development. It encourages multifunctional space usage and active engagement with farming, landscaping, waste recycling, and energy generation.
- Knowledge Dissemination: Through the “SustaiNet” network, the project aims to facilitate knowledge sharing and dissemination among academic institutions, students, and professionals, fostering an inclusive learning experience.
By prioritizing sustainability, integration, and knowledge exchange, the Humanscapes Habitat project in Auroville represents a significant stride towards a more sustainable and harmonious urban future.
