Crafting Tranquility From Mud Design Studio by Rawan Muqaddas

Introduction

Rawan Muqaddas, the creative mind behind From Mud Design Studio, envisioned a space in Kuwait City dedicated to the therapeutic art of clay sculpting. Located on the first floor of a Modernist building in the textile market, the studio embraces the essence of clay craftsmanship in a serene environment.

Concept and Inspiration

From Mud Studio draws inspiration from the natural and calming qualities of clay. Clean lines and a soothing palette reflect the studio’s holistic approach, creating a workspace that resonates with tranquility. The design reflects the ethos of making clay art accessible to all.

Design Features

The studio’s design revolves around the fluidity and movement inherent in clay sculpting. Light distribution mimics the building’s concrete facade, casting subtle shadows and ensuring privacy through fluted glass. Perimeter shelving, crafted from steel and maple wood, offers functionality while maintaining a sense of calmness.

Project Brief

The brief for From Mud Studio aimed to create a space for exploration, research, and creation with clay as the central medium. It included provisions for storage, a kiln room, a semi-private office, and a lounge area, catering to artists of all skill levels.

Key Challenges

Optimizing space for maximum storage and efficiency posed a significant challenge. The design needed to balance functionality with aesthetics while ensuring an inviting atmosphere conducive to creativity.

Key Products and Materials

The studio features solid and veneered maple wood sourced from Malaysia, stainless steel, powder-coated metal shelving systems, and fluted glass. Emphasis was placed on incorporating natural light and creating a harmonious interplay between interior and exterior elements.

Client and Mission

Aisha Al-Saif, the client and a Kuwait-based ceramicist, aimed to democratize clay art by making it accessible to all. Her mission is to teach various techniques from different cultures, fostering creativity and appreciation for the craft.

Project Significance

From Mud Studio contributes to the revitalization of Kuwait’s textile market, introducing creative initiatives to formerly neglected spaces. The studio’s location in a historic building reflects a shift towards adaptive reuse and urban regeneration, breathing new life into urban environments.
