Introduction

The beauty salon “toiro/h” unveils a new store in Izumo City, Shimane Prefecture, Japan, with a concept centered around diverse individuality and brilliance. Situated near Izumo Taisha, one of Japan’s prominent shrines, the location offers a scenic backdrop of layered clouds, inspiring the architectural design to synchronize with this natural phenomenon.

Architecture Inspired by Nature

Architect Takashi Ago aimed to emulate the soft, swaying motion of clouds with the architectural design, creating an atmosphere of tranquility and harmony. Drawing inspiration from the huge shimenawa (sacred rice-straw ropes) found in the precincts of Izumo Taisha, a 12mm white rope twisted with thin resin fibers was utilized, spanning a total length of 1300m.

Design Concept

The ropes are intricately tied to the ground at irregular intervals and bent at varying angles, resembling the folding of a traditional folding screen. To enhance the visual impact, knots were filled with local crushed stone, creating an illusion of them rising above the ground. Both the exterior and interior spaces feature the same materials, blurring the distinction between them and amplifying the sense of ambiguity.

Ambiguous Spaces

The interior of the salon reflects the bleached tones of the exterior, with mirrors strategically placed to create imaginary reflections, further blurring the boundaries between reality and illusion. This deliberate design choice encourages visitors to perceive the space in unique ways, with different “colors” emerging based on individual perspectives and interactions with the environment.
