Located in Tokyo, Japan, the GRAPH Tokyo Head Office underwent a transformation in 2021, led by G architects studio and Ryohei Tanaka. Situated within the prestigious Hill Side Terrace complex designed by renowned architect Fumihiko Maki, the office space embodies simplicity and respect for its architectural surroundings.

Architectural Context

Hill Side Terrace, a mixed-use development featuring private residences, shops, and offices, provided the backdrop for the GRAPH Tokyo Head Office. Positioned near a serene mound adorned with a small shrine and lush greenery, the office enjoys a picturesque setting amidst preserved trees.

Client Inspiration

The decision to relocate to this particular building was influenced by Mr. Kitagawa’s fond memories of attending a school designed by the same architect. However, upon inspection, the space had undergone numerous renovations, losing its original essence. The project aimed to restore the architect’s hallmark touch while creating a conducive environment for graphic design work.

Design Approach

Given the client’s business focus on graphic design, the design approach prioritized simplicity and minimalism. Opting for an all-white color palette, the architects sought to maintain a clean and uncluttered aesthetic throughout the space. The simplicity of the design pays homage to the building’s architectural significance while providing a neutral backdrop for creative work.

Cultural Influence

To further emphasize simplicity and cultural tradition, the entrance features four pairs of slippers in different colors, inviting visitors to adhere to Japanese custom by removing their shoes upon entry. This practice not only adds to the serene atmosphere but also evokes a sense of reverence, akin to the boundary zone found at Shinto shrines.
