Exploring Fusion: The Concept Library in Quzhou, China

Exploring Fusion: The Concept Library in Quzhou, China

Situated amidst the rural landscapes of Zhejiang Province, China, the Concept Library stands as a testament to the fusion of contemporary formal expression and vernacular material culture. Designed by HCCH Studio, this spiral shell library is nestled within a high grass field, challenging traditional architectural norms.

Unique Design Elements

The Concept Library features a continuous surface generated by two sweeping semicircles, blurring the boundaries between interior and exterior spaces. Constructed using red bricks, the shell rises approximately 5 meters high with a diameter of 10 meters. Sunlight filters into the interior through an opening at the top, illuminating the space and creating a serene atmosphere for visitors. Small holes in the walls allow readers to engage with text displayed inside acrylic balls, integrating literature with the surrounding landscape.

Construction Challenges and Solutions

The distribution of bricks along the double-curved surface posed significant construction challenges. To address this, perforated steel plates were used as a steel-reinforced framework, filled with high-strength concrete. This innovative approach ensured the structural integrity of the shell, despite its complex geometry. Bricks of 12 different widths were strategically placed to maintain radial continuity, resulting in a pixelated matrix distribution that defies conventional brick construction techniques.

Integration of Traditional and Modern

The Concept Library represents a bold attempt at rural construction, blending digital industrialization with traditional materials. By pushing the boundaries of architectural innovation, HCCH Studio has created a transcendent experience that goes beyond the idyllic portrayal of the countryside. Serving as a contemporary shelter for both body and mind, the library encourages visitors to immerse themselves in literature while connecting with the natural environment.

Encouraging Reflection

More than just a physical structure, the Concept Library embodies a philosophy of reflection and contemplation. It serves as a refuge from the hustle and bustle of urban life, inviting visitors to read, reflect, and engage with the broader world outside. Through its unique design and immersive experience, the library fosters a deeper connection between individuals, nature, and the written word, making it a cherished cultural landmark in the heart of rural China.
