Embracing Nature in Yangpyeong-Gun, South Korea

Situated in the serene Mangmi Village in Yangpyeong, South Korea, Mangmi Farm by Todot Architects and Partners stands as a testament to a harmonious blend of community and landscape architecture. Nestled amidst the convergence of three mountains, the project emerged as a community facility, glasshouse, and campsite, at the behest of a retired couple who found solace in cultivating fruit trees in this tranquil valley.

The Essence of Mangmi Village

Retaining a calm and peaceful ambiance amidst the deep mountains, the site is distinguished by its rich forest, where trees stand as witnesses to the memories embedded in the land. With lead architects So Jung Ho and Cho Byung Kyu at the helm, Mangmi Farm is an ode to the significance of the forest and a celebration of the natural beauty that envelops it.

Birch Trees: The Design Inspiration

Drawing inspiration from the globally distributed birch trees, known for their slender silver appearance and adaptability to colder climates, the architectural intervention aimed to mirror the birch’s delicate yet resilient nature. Envisioning the structures as silver units seamlessly blending with the verdant surroundings, the project sought to become an enduring part of the forest landscape.

Tree-Like Shape: Isosceles Triangle

To embody the essence of a tree, the architects chose the geometric form of an isosceles triangle. This form not only symbolizes the primitive shape of trees but also provided a practical advantage. Utilizing SPF structural wood of 20 feet (6.1m) length, the architects achieved three stories with a 60-degree angle, seamlessly merging walls and roofs into a singular form.

Warm Textures of Wood: A Natural Palette

The extensive use of wood, from exterior and interior walls to roof structures and floor finishes, introduces warm textures that resonate with nature. Spruce wood studs and pine tree plywood contribute to the structural and aesthetic elements, creating a cohesive visual narrative. The main exterior materials, including galvanized steel and cedar, mimic the silver bark of birch trees, ensuring a harmonious integration with the natural surroundings.

Entangled Arrangement: A Symphony of Buildings and Forest

The layout design focuses on creating a sequence of experiences as one traverses the sloped site. Beginning at a lower level and ascending gradually, the arrangement of masses reveals itself in entangled units, offering diverse perspectives. From the discreet entry mass to the mid-level birch trees and cabins, the entangled arrangement fosters a unique connection with the greenery.

A Haven for Urban Dwellers

Mangmi Farm is more than a structure; it is a haven for urban dwellers seeking respite from the rigors of city life. With its diverse wood species, natural lighting, and thoughtful spatial depth, the farm invites citizens to relax and commune with nature. Mangmi Farm stands as an embodiment of thoughtful architecture coexisting seamlessly with the forest, providing a retreat for those yearning for a connection with the simplicity and warmth of the natural world.
