Redefining Space De La Sól Work and Exhibition Space

Redefining Space De La Sól Work and Exhibition Space

A Fusion of Concepts: Crafting a Multifunctional Hub

De La Sól, located in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, embodies a unique blend of functions, serving as an exhibition space, cafe lounge, retail showcase, and client experience center for Sun Life Insurance. Designed by The Lab Saigon, the space reflects the dynamism of both Sun Life’s brand identity and the vibrant city of Ho Chi Minh.

Harmonizing Tradition and Modernity: Design Elements

The architectural vision for De La Sól integrates modern elements with the historical villa facade, preserving its heritage while introducing a new steel and glass structure. A striking loop staircase connects the two, symbolizing growth and continuity. Outdoor kinetic sculptures not only provide shading but also serve as visual markers, representing the concept of growth inherent in the space.

Unveiling History: Rediscovering the Past

During the design process, the team uncovered the rich history embedded within the old villa’s structure. Layers of paint and plaster were peeled away, revealing arch gates, various brick types, and a century-old legacy. Each brick tells a story, showcasing the cultural heritage of Ho Chi Minh City and adding depth to the space’s narrative.

Honoring Heritage: Material Selection

Material choices pay homage to the villa’s origins, with original brickwork and wooden beams retained to preserve authenticity. Stainless steel is strategically employed for its visual contrast and resilience, ensuring durability even during Vietnam’s rainy season. This thoughtful selection reflects a commitment to both aesthetics and practicality.

Versatile Gathering Spaces: The Outdoor Deck and Loop Staircase

The outdoor deck, framed by the loop staircase, serves as a central gathering point, offering a multi-functional lobby for various activities at De La Sól. The staircase itself doubles as a viewing deck, providing panoramic views of the space below and fostering engagement with the surrounding environment.

In essence, De La Sól embodies a harmonious fusion of tradition and innovation, where historical significance intertwines with contemporary design. Through thoughtful preservation and strategic interventions, The Lab Saigon has created a space that not only serves its functional purposes but also celebrates the cultural identity of Ho Chi Minh City.
