Context and Vision

Situated in the Montjoie urban development zone of Saint-Denis, France, the Îlot Montjoie Mixed-Use Complex redefines urban living through innovative architectural design. Developed by Atelier Novembre and Vincent Lavergne Architecture Urbanisme, this project seeks to create semi-autonomous perimeter blocks that, when completed, will contribute to the cohesive urban fabric of the area.

Architectural Concept

The project emphasizes unity and density within the urban landscape. The buildings are intricately designed to spiral around, forming the streets and pathways that integrate with the surrounding environment. This mirror construction approach ensures that the complex aligns seamlessly with the broader urban context, connecting its spaces to the surrounding cityscape.

Functional Integration

A key feature of the design is the integration of diverse program elements within the complex. Rather than simple superpositions, the project employs genuine topography and sculpting of the ground to create unique collective spaces. The permeable nature of these spaces allows for fluid interaction and the emergence of new uses, both within and beyond the block boundaries.

Materiality and Sobriety

In response to the post-financial crisis era, the project adopts a concept of sobriety, evident in its materiality. The exterior presents a compact brick mass, with glimpses of the green center visible through carefully placed openings. Internally, plaster and wood façades evoke a sense of domesticity, complemented by the presence of a generous central garden.
