Rediscovering History: The Concept of 1G Store

Rediscovering History: The Concept of 1G Store

Nestled in Guimarães, Portugal, the 1G Store, designed by Estudio Além, epitomizes a harmonious blend of historical heritage and contemporary design. With a focus on product display and distinctive aesthetics, this renovation project breathes new life into a commercial space.

Design Inspiration: Castle and Ramparts

Drawing inspiration from Guimarães’ iconic castle and city ramparts, the interior design concept revolves around evoking the city’s rich historical narrative. Structural elements crafted from electro-welded wire mesh mimic the geometric patterns found in medieval battlements, creating a visually striking yet ethereal ambiance.

The Ethereal Battlement

The medieval battlement motif, reimagined in galvanized steel wire mesh, serves as a versatile display element within the store. Transparent and reflective, this incorporeal battlement not only showcases products but also acts as a symbolic representation of Guimarães’ architectural legacy.

Virtual Rampart: A Maze of Transparencies

Stretching along the store’s perimeter, the wire mesh battlement forms a virtual rampart, creating a complex interplay of metallic grids and transparencies. This maze-like structure, filled with local granite stone, adds depth and texture, encapsulating a fictional moment in history.

Fusion of Materials: Granite and Steel

The front counter, crafted from locally sourced granite blocks, seamlessly integrates traditional materials with modern design. The raw, unfinished texture of the granite, juxtaposed with glass and stainless steel elements, adds a tactile and sensory dimension to the space.

Streamlined Functionality

Every aspect of the store, from structural details to fittings and accessories, is meticulously designed to enhance functionality and streamline the display process. Secondary elements, such as benches and fitting rooms, not only serve practical purposes but also contribute to the overall scenography of the space.

Conclusion

The 1G Store stands as a testament to the transformative power of architectural design. By marrying historical inspiration with contemporary aesthetics, Estudio Além has created a captivating retail environment that pays homage to Guimarães’ rich cultural heritage while embracing modernity.
