Rediscovering Nantes: The VERSUS Installation

Rediscovering Nantes: The VERSUS Installation

In 2021, TITAN architects unveiled the VERSUS installation in Nantes, France, breathing new life into the city’s historic square with a temporary structure inspired by the timeless designs of architect Mathurin Crucy. This innovative project, featuring a roller skating rink, pays homage to Crucy’s vision while infusing the square with a contemporary flair.

Embracing Tradition and Innovation

Drawing inspiration from Crucy’s emphasis on form and balance, TITAN architects crafted a dynamic installation that harmonizes with the square’s natural slope. The 38m diameter main structure, constructed from prefabricated white concrete, stands as a testament to modern engineering while respecting the historic fabric of the square. Meanwhile, the poured-in-place white concrete rink track adapts seamlessly to the irregularities of the ground, inviting visitors to experience the thrill of roller skating in a unique setting.

A Hub of Activity and Entertainment

The VERSUS installation transforms the square into a vibrant hub of activity, catering to both casual strollers and sports enthusiasts alike. Roller derby enthusiasts can partake in matches on the track, fostering a sense of community and camaraderie. Spectators can gather on the steps of the nearby theatre, repurposed as bleachers, to cheer on the competitors in an exhilarating open-air spectacle.

Inviting Interaction and Contemplation

Beyond the thrill of roller skating, VERSUS encourages visitors to engage with the space in various ways. Benches lining the edge of the installation invite contemplation and reflection, providing a tranquil spot to admire the surroundings. By blurring the lines between historic architecture, modern design, and recreational activities, VERSUS offers a new perspective on Place Graslin, enriching the cultural landscape of Nantes.

A Fusion of Art and Recreation

As part of the Le Voyage à Nantes art festival, VERSUS serves as a temporary oasis of creativity and leisure, welcoming visitors until the end of September 2021. In addition to roller skating, the installation offers a skate loan service, ensuring that everyone can participate in this immersive experience. By seamlessly integrating art, architecture, and recreation, VERSUS embodies the spirit of innovation and celebration that defines Nantes’ cultural identity.
