Rediscovering Spiritual Connection: The Ploc! Installation

Rediscovering Spiritual Connection: The Ploc! Installation

Concept and Inspiration

Ploc! emerges as a unique reinterpretation of the traditional Japanese fountain system, shishi-odoshi, crafted by ici-bas architects for the Festival des Cabanes 2023 in Faverges, France. The name “Ploc!” not only evokes the sound of colliding elements but also represents “Pluies LOCalisées,” French for Localized Rains. Situated adjacent to a church, this installation serves as a portal, bridging the gap between the mundane and the sacred, offering visitors a spiritual journey amidst the grandeur of the surrounding landscape.

Symbolism and Purpose

Central to the concept of Ploc! is its role as a conduit for answered prayers. Water, symbolizing divine grace, cascades from the sky and is channeled into rocking cannons, triggering the signature “ploc” sounds associated with the shishi-odoshi principle. These acoustic reverberations, juxtaposed against the expansive vista, create a captivating sensory experience, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in the essence of the Annecy landscape, particularly during rainy days.

Architectural Design

The architectural design of Ploc! is characterized by its structural simplicity and harmonious integration with the natural environment. A three-dimensional grid serves as the framework for the installation, blending seamlessly with the forty cannons and the picturesque backdrop. Constructed primarily from locally sourced timber, harvested from a nearby sawmill, the hut and cannons exude a rustic charm while embodying the spirit of sustainability and community engagement.

Construction and Legacy

Despite its ephemeral nature, the construction of Ploc! was a collaborative endeavor, involving skilled craftsmen and generous volunteers. Over a span of two weeks, the installation took shape, symbolizing a fleeting yet profound connection between humanity and nature. As visitors engage with Ploc!, they are not only enveloped in its acoustic enchantment but also invited to reflect on the transient beauty of existence and the enduring legacy of communal creativity.
