Revitalizing Strijp-S: The Haasje Over Project

Revitalizing Strijp-S: The Haasje Over Project

Reconnecting with Industrial Heritage

The Haasje Over project by VMX Architects in Eindhoven, Netherlands, marks a significant effort to revitalize the former Philips area known as Strijp-S. Built during the second machine age, Strijp-S once epitomized efficiency and rationality in industrial design. However, over the years, the physical connections between buildings faded, disconnecting the area from its rich history. Haasje Over seeks to reintroduce these connections, bridging the gap between past and present.

Embracing Urban Connections

At the heart of Haasje Over are two bridges that symbolize the project’s aim to reconnect with its surroundings. The main tower, standing 70 meters tall, houses loft apartments with expansive windows and generous ceiling heights. One bridge extends over an existing industrial hall, now a skate park, preserving the area’s gritty and vibrant atmosphere. The second bridge links to a roof garden atop the Anton-building, fostering community interaction and activating underutilized spaces.

Extending Living Spaces

The design philosophy of Haasje Over emphasizes the seamless integration of indoor and outdoor spaces. Large bay windows create a visual connection with the neighborhood, blurring the boundaries between inside and outside. Residents are encouraged to immerse themselves in their surroundings, with deep window bays providing cozy nooks for relaxation and contemplation.

Aesthetic and Functional Design

The facade of Haasje Over combines robust concrete grids with sleek steel and glass elements, paying homage to the industrial heritage of Strijp-S. This juxtaposition of materials not only adds visual interest but also reflects the progressive spirit of the machine age. The result is a striking architectural ensemble that stands out while honoring its historical context.

Embracing Community and Context

Haasje Over embodies a vision of urban living that is open, inclusive, and deeply rooted in its context. By reestablishing physical connections and embracing the unique character of Strijp-S, the project creates a vibrant and lively urban community. As Eindhoven continues to evolve, Haasje Over serves as a beacon of sustainable urban development, preserving the past while embracing the future.
