Situated in Gdańsk, Poland, the modernization of the Main Building of the Wybrzeże Theater posed a challenging yet deeply rewarding task for WAPA Warsztat Architektury Pracownia Autorska. Led by architect Krzysztof Kozłowski, the project embarked on a journey to revitalize a historic theater deeply intertwined with the fabric of the city.
Design Evolution
The journey began in 2015 with a competition win for the new auditorium, marking the inception of a meticulous design process that spanned several years. The existing building, erected in the early 1960s on the remnants of a pre-war structure, held numerous secrets and surprises, rooted in its historical urban context. The primary goal was to craft a modern facility with an auditorium offering excellent visibility and acoustics, equipped with state-of-the-art technology to enhance artistic performances.
Architectural Innovations
The design envisioned a multifunctional space, blending a modern stage with advanced features such as two-storey trap lifts and a revolving section. The entrance area and foyer were carefully crafted to provide a comfortable environment for patrons to socialize and immerse themselves in the city’s historic ambiance. With unwavering support from the investor, the project seamlessly integrated creative and functional elements to create an environment where artistic expression thrives without technical limitations.
Spatial Harmony and Aesthetic Experience
A key aspect of the design philosophy was the juxtaposition of vibrant colors and materials in the foyer against the subdued elegance of the auditorium. Despite the richness of artistic expression, the overall design remained austere, prioritizing ample space for theatrical performances. Additionally, the rooftop was transformed into a terrace, offering a unique venue for events with panoramic views of the old town of Gdańsk.
Conclusion: Serving Art and Audience
The completion of the project marks not only the revitalization of the Wybrzeże Theater but also the culmination of a creative journey aimed at serving artists and audiences alike. By blending modern architectural innovations with a deep respect for history and culture, the Main Building of the Wybrzeże Theater stands as a testament to the enduring power of artistic expression in the heart of Gdańsk.
