Atelier Sizhou – 2023
Symbiosis with Luxelakes Environment
Situated in Chengdu Shi, China, “Tianfu Food Island Phase II” by Atelier Sizhou seamlessly integrates into the Luxelakes environment, leveraging the abundant water resources that define the area. With an expansive 6000 m² space and visionary architects Xianshu Jin and Jia Liu at the helm, this culinary and retail destination embodies a strategic layout that harmonizes with the lakeside surroundings.
Strategic Shoreline Planning
Given the prominence of water resources in Luxelakes, the project prioritizes a meandering shoreline, establishing a connection between plots and water. “Tianfu Food Island Phase II” strategically places all buildings along the lakeshore, forming a dynamic pedestrian main street. By positioning major commercial volumes directly adjacent to the water, the project maximizes engagement with the lakeside environment.
Thoughtful Space Layout
Early planning emphasized the significance of public access to the lakeshore. To balance the economic viability of lakeside businesses and the broader public value, a meticulous layout decision was made. Placing the buildings towards the rear of the field, the design allows public flow through the front, ensuring a shared lakeside experience for all visitors.
Cascading Design for Inclusive Engagement
The cascading architecture and landscape platforms not only echo the natural site contours but also enhance operational dynamics. This design creates an expansive public and shared space, inviting everyone—whether enjoying food or simply strolling—to actively participate in the lakeside ambiance.
Under Eaves Exploration
Within the building, strategic use of under-eaves spaces introduces intimate, small-scale areas, fostering a desire for exploration. These spaces, while increasing the building’s allure, also provide opportunities for smaller businesses to contribute to the lakeside atmosphere.
Artistic Building Form
Deliberations on the building’s form focused on achieving both unity and independence for individual businesses. The sloping roofs, contributing to a layered aesthetic, symbolize different operating entities under each eave. The intent is to convey that “Tianfu Food Island” is a vibrant cluster, distinct from a monolithic “box,” and embodies the essence of a lakeside community business rather than a city-centric enterprise.
Harmonizing with Lakeside Ambiance
“Tianfu Food Island Phase II” goes beyond being a mere culinary and retail space; it is an invitation for all to shape the lakeside atmosphere. Embracing warmth, cordiality, leisure, and elegance, this project is a testament to the architects’ vision—a lakeside haven where every individual, consumer or not, becomes an active participant, contributing to the unique temperament of Luxelakes.
