In the heart of Yongsan-gu, South Korea, the architectural prowess of Boundless unfolds in Comfort Seoul, a commercial space spanning 646 m². Lead architect Moon Jooho envisioned a project transcending mere infrastructure, aiming to reconnect Sowol-gil and Duteopbawi-gil, divided by cliffs in Huam-dong Village. The goal was to create a new path, a communal space fostering human connections and story-making.

Redefining Urban Spatial Experiences

Urban life often unfolds on the roads we traverse. Boundless sought to go beyond the conventional by envisioning this project as a new road within the village itself, seamlessly integrating with the existing urban fabric. The ambition was to explore how this innovative approach would transform experiences and interactions within the community.

Embracing Step Differences for Abundant Spatial Experience

Capitalizing on the 15m step difference between Duteopbawi-gil and Sowol-gil, the architects aimed to craft an open architecture that offers rich spatial experiences. The central path, evolving as the main character, guides individuals through a three-dimensional journey within the building. Starting from Duteopbawi-gil, it meanders through architectural spaces and roads, culminating in a rooftop terrace with panoramic views of Namsan Mountain and Seoul.

Creating a Vertical Small Village

At each stage of the vertical journey, experiential elements are strategically placed, forming a vertical small village. Spaces, interconnected in three dimensions, were tailored to the varied heights of the environment, with resident-centric programs inhabiting each area.

Timeless Design for a Meaningful City Space

Boundless envisioned Comfort Seoul as a lasting testament to the city, embracing durable materials and textures capable of adapting to evolving circumstances. The exposed concrete mold determined the texture of stairs, slabs, and retaining walls, emphasizing shape and rhythm.

Architectural Elements: A Symphony of Materials

The stairs, a central element in the space, utilized EPS molds, creating a vertical rhythm with densely arranged intaglio. Horizontal slabs on each floor were accentuated with protruding eaves, enhancing the visual experience. The play between horizontal and vertical elements was achieved using PET plywood, adding a dynamic rhythm to the structure. The outer skin, primarily glass, minimized walls through column beams, allowing dynamic changes in the surrounding nature.
