A Tale of Transformation: YiXi Courtyard in Beijing

A Tale of Transformation: YiXi Courtyard in Beijing

In 2018, amidst the buzz of “Travel Frog” and the excitement of the World Cup in Russia, a new chapter began for YiXi, a renowned cultural institution in China. Their friends approached Wonder Architects with a vision for a transformative space. YiXi was thriving, with popular talks circulating social circles regularly. The original office, though cozy, lacked functional space. Thus, they embarked on a journey to create a new space near the East Third Ring Road in Beijing.

Embracing Heritage

The new office found its home in a 1960s factory building, boasting a brick and wood structure spanning 200 square meters. Initially divided into small compartments, it lacked the charm YiXi envisioned. Inspired by the dream of a courtyard, Wonder Architects sought to blend grounded authenticity with practical design.

Crafting a Courtyard

The architects dismantled internal partitions, unveiling the building’s original red brick walls and wooden trusses. These industrial remnants were transformed into a sprawling wilderness, symbolizing the sky and nature within the office space. Large custom furniture pieces were strategically placed, creating a “house” amidst the factory’s vast expanse.

The Story Wall

A furniture wall served as both a divider and storage, housing the narratives of YiXi’s unique editors. Blurring the lines between space and storytelling, this wall became a canvas for their semi-invisible existence, reminiscent of the “Guests” installation at the 2009 Venice Biennale.

A Stage for Creativity

YiXi expressed a desire for an indoor stage to record their programs. This stage, combined with movable installations in the courtyard, offered endless possibilities for space utilization, reflecting Beijing’s historical knack for creating dynamic indoor environments.

Daydreams and Reflections

The architects intentionally kept the space’s distinctiveness minimal, allowing for spontaneous events to unfold. Five years since its completion, YiXi Courtyard continues to evolve, branching into countless futures. While time may eventually wear down physical spaces, the memories and experiences within them remain eternally vibrant.

A Timeless Legacy

In the corner of the mind, the gateway to YiXi Courtyard remains illuminated, preserving the laughter and conversations of the past. As Borges aptly stated, time branches into infinite futures, each filled with unique moments and memories. YiXi Courtyard stands as a testament to the enduring power of transformation and creativity.
