Transforming Public Spaces: The Arceaux District Renovation

In 2023, Collectif Parenthèse, in collaboration with the Base landscape agency, embarked on a journey to revitalize the Arceaux district in Montpellier, France. Situated near the historic city center, the district boasts a vibrant market, bustling shops, cozy cafes, and rich architectural heritage, making it an ideal environment for community development. However, the presence of a sprawling open-air car park and the lack of clear demarcation between motorized and soft mobility posed challenges to the area’s public space.

Redefining Urban Spaces: The Vision for Renovation

To address these challenges, the proposed renovation centered around the theme of “the city at child height,” aiming to enhance connectivity between the city center and the Arceaux district. As a precursor to the planned developments, Collectif Parenthèse introduced a temporary entertainment space, prioritizing children’s engagement and participation in reshaping public spaces.

A Playground for All Ages

The temporary installation features a range of amenities, including a “class outside the walls” equipped with bleachers and large tables, swings, a motor skills course, a dancing mirror, a misting area, and mini sports courts. These elements foster a playful and inclusive environment, encouraging social interaction and physical activity among residents of all ages.

Sustainable Solutions: Embracing Circular Economy

In line with principles of circular economy, the modular components of the installation are designed to be easily assembled, disassembled, stored, and reused. This ensures their versatility for future outdoor events, festivals, and school activities, minimizing environmental impact and promoting resource efficiency.

Collaborative Efforts and Community Engagement

The success of the project is attributed to the collaborative efforts of various stakeholders, including the Métropole de Montpellier, SA3M, FZR Sethi for his artistic contribution, and the collective Ne Rougissez Pas for their graphic designs. Moreover, input from the educational community and active participation of children from Chaptal and Jeanne d’Arc schools played a vital role in co-creating and shaping the installations.

The temporary entertainment space not only serves as a catalyst for community engagement but also lays the groundwork for a gradual transformation of public spaces, fostering a sense of ownership and pride among residents. As Montpellier embraces innovation and inclusivity, initiatives like these pave the way for a more vibrant and people-centric urban landscape.
