Nestled on the Gulf of Mexico coast, Chicxulub Puerto is a seaside town with close ties to the city of Progreso. At a pivotal location within the town, surrounded by key corridors, lies the Chicxulub Market Plaza—a project designed by Estudio MMX. This architectural endeavor seeks to enhance the urban fabric of the area while integrating seamlessly with its natural surroundings.

Design Concept

The Chicxulub Market Plaza project encompasses both the revitalization of the plaza and the construction of a market, conceived as a unified endeavor to serve the community’s needs. Divided into two distinct zones, the plaza to the north features a court and shaded greenery, while the market to the south comprises sales volumes and service facilities. These components are carefully integrated to create complementary and transitional spaces that connect with the local context.

Market Design

The market area consists of four sales volumes and one service volume, all sheltered by inverted gable roofs interconnected by skylights. These roofs provide protection for the stalls, corridors, and rest areas within. Each sales volume accommodates six stalls, with the service volume housing administrative offices, storage areas, and amenities shared with the plaza. The arrangement of volumes creates an access plaza, fostering connections with neighboring commercial fronts.

Plaza Organization

Central to the plaza is a verdant garden, serving as a focal point for community gatherings and events. Shaded areas and seating arrangements offer opportunities for relaxation and social interaction, complemented by the covered sports court. This multifunctional space not only caters to recreational activities but also serves as a venue for civic engagements and communal celebrations.
