The SDJ Nursery, located in Setagaya City, Japan, emerges as an architectural response to the societal challenge of diminishing community connections, particularly among children. The impact of increasing nuclear families, a declining birthrate, and the heightened security measures in urban nurseries has led to a detachment of children from their local communities. In addressing this concern, SDJ Nursery aims to restore vital learning opportunities centered around values like “independence” and “individuality,” which thrive through community interactions.
Cultivating Independence through Practical Experiences
Aligned with educational approaches such as citizenship education and “Education for Sustainable Development” (ESD), SDJ Nursery believes that children’s practical experiences, engaging with local people and their daily lives, contribute significantly to their growth in independence and individuality. The architects envision these experiences shaping children into responsible future citizens actively participating in building a better society.
Architectural Design: Balancing Security and Community Openness
The architectural design of SDJ Nursery prioritizes security essential for a nursery school while incorporating open “community zones.” These zones, including a gallery, garden, large and small community spaces, and a terrace along the railroad tracks street, serve as conduits for community engagement.
Daily Interactions and Local Events
SDJ Nursery thrives on daily interactions between children and local residents within the open garden and terrace. A gallery showcasing children’s works becomes a focal point for local residents, fostering a sense of connection. Community spaces witness various daily activities, creating a dynamic environment. Additionally, the nursery actively hosts local events like concerts, plays, exhibitions, festivals, and workshops, further bridging the gap between the nursery and the local community.
Community as a Learning Field
The nursery envisions children growing up in an environment enriched with diverse activities alongside local residents. The emphasis lies on providing numerous opportunities for cultural experiences, effectively treating the “community as a field of learning.”
SDJ Nursery, conceived by HIBINOSEKKEI and Youji no Shiro, not only functions as a secure educational institution but also as a vibrant hub promoting community integration and active participation, laying the foundation for a future generation deeply connected to their societal roots.
