Architectural Innovation and Urban Integration
The Logroño Intermodal Station, conceived by Ábalos + Sentkiewicz arquitectos, represents a paradigm shift in urban design and transportation infrastructure. Born from an international competition, the project reimagines the conventional train and bus station by embedding it within the city’s urban fabric. Rather than merely addressing infrastructural needs, the proposal prioritizes urban cohesion, weaving together spatially segregated areas to create a cohesive public realm.
Reimagining Public Space
Central to the project’s ethos is the creation of expansive public spaces that redefine the city’s historical centrality. By repurposing the underground irrigation system from the Ebro River, the project introduces a vast green roof that serves as both a thermal insulator for the stations and a lush urban park for citizens. This innovative approach not only enhances environmental sustainability but also fosters social cohesion, catalyzing real estate development and promoting balanced urban growth.
Sustainable Urbanism and Circular Design
The integration of drainage systems for rainwater collection and reuse, coupled with underground irrigation channels, amplifies the park’s ecological functionality. These measures not only mitigate climate change effects but also enhance air purification and biodiversity, reinstating a natural equilibrium within the urban environment. Furthermore, the station’s design emphasizes connectivity and accessibility, with a monumental urban dome spanning 60 meters, serving as a symbol of urban and territorial cohesion.
Architectural Harmony and Functional Elegance
The architectural expression of the Train and Bus Stations seamlessly blends with the surrounding park landscape, fostering a harmonious relationship between built form and natural environment. While the Train Station prioritizes fluid transitions between access points and platforms, the Bus Station accentuates connectivity with the park through strategically positioned light wells and staircases. Underpinning the design is a commitment to functional elegance and user-centricity.
Recognized Excellence in Sustainability
In 2022, the Logroño Intermodal Station attained the prestigious BREEAM Spain – Urbanism certification, affirming its status as a global benchmark in sustainable urban design. Moreover, the park’s versatile public realm has served as a canvas for international artists, further enriching the urban experience and fostering cultural vibrancy.
The Logroño Intermodal Station stands as a testament to the transformative potential of architectural innovation and sustainable urbanism, heralding a new era of integrated transportation hubs and vibrant public spaces.
