In Seixal, Portugal, the municipality’s main town boasts a 2.1-hectare strip of land adjacent to the riverside avenue. Designed by RISCO architects, this project, completed in 2017, revitalizes the area, enhancing its cultural and recreational significance while preserving its historical charm.
Context and Heritage Preservation
Situated on the south bank of the Tagus River, across from Lisbon, the project site is bordered by the river and the town’s historical center. The architectural heritage and cultural significance of the town’s historical buildings provide a unique backdrop for the redevelopment initiative.
Geometric Design and Spatial Dynamics
Over the years, changes in the riverfront’s organic design have created prominences and indentations along the riverbank. Leveraging this geometric growth, the project introduces a route with distinctive physical features, offering various points of contact with the water and surrounding environment.
Green Recreational Spaces
The redesign replaces the previous car park with a green recreational area extending to the riverbank. This transformation creates a new square featuring planted, shaded, and open regions, providing space for cultural events and community gatherings.
Traffic Management and Accessibility
The redesigned traffic system prioritizes pedestrians and cyclists while accommodating limited car traffic. By introducing one-way systems and pedestrian-friendly zones, the plan aims to enhance safety and accessibility along the riverside avenue.
Integration of New Elements
The project integrates new elements seamlessly into the landscape through three types of surface materials. Ceramic brick pavements, characterized by their artisanal quality, serve pedestrian, cycle, and automobile circulation. Organic areas allow for land modeling and turf surfaces, while limestone sidewalk borders complement existing pavements.
Conclusion: A Synthesis of Tradition and Innovation
In reimagining Seixal’s riverside landscape, RISCO architects have successfully blended tradition with innovation. The revitalized public space not only preserves the town’s historical character but also enhances its recreational and cultural offerings, ensuring a vibrant and dynamic environment for residents and visitors alike.
