Navigating Uncertainty

In the wake of two years marked by the uncertainties of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Sawerdō Coffee & Bakery project in Geneva, Switzerland, embarked on a journey to redefine the essence of communal gathering. Designed by BUREAU architects, the project aimed to address the prevailing sense of distrust and apprehension, envisioning a space where people could come together without fear of the viral other.

A Leap of Faith

Fueled by a sense of hope and determination, the founders of Sawerdō embraced the challenge of creating a gathering space amidst a climate of uncertainty. Spatial Concept

Blending Aesthetics and Intention

Echoing the sentiment captured in Jeff Wall’s iconic image “Dressing Poultry,” Sawerdō endeavors to celebrate the act of cooking, nourishing, and sharing as integral components of communal living. While the aesthetic of the project may differ from Wall’s work, its underlying intention remains the same: to create a unifying space where life unfolds in all its richness and diversity.

Inhabited Lightbox

Much like Wall’s lightboxes, Sawerdō emerges as a beacon of warmth and hospitality, inviting patrons to engage in moments of joy and connection. The space itself becomes an inhabited lightbox, where scenes of life play out against a backdrop of shared experiences and communal spirit, reminding us of our shared humanity amidst the complexities of the modern world.
