In 2021, SpaceGroup undertook a groundbreaking project in Sandnes, Norway, reimagining Ruten Park as a vibrant public space that fosters community engagement and celebrates the city’s rich history. By transforming a former central parking lot into a dynamic urban park, the project represents a paradigm shift in urban design and infrastructure.
Contextual Framework
Situated between two contrasting contexts of elevated train tracks and a bustling shopping mall, Ruten Park emerged as a vital buffer in the urban landscape. The project’s inception marked a departure from the car-centric infrastructure of the past, envisioning a new era of pedestrian-friendly public spaces. Through meticulous research, diplomacy, and activism spanning nine years, SpaceGroup navigated a complex journey towards realizing this transformative vision.
Harmonizing Urban Fabrics
Sandnes’ historic center juxtaposes with a burgeoning waterfront district, characterized by post-industrial structures. The design of Ruten Park seamlessly integrates these disparate elements, employing a 6×6 meter grid of trees, columns, and lampposts that extend the historic city’s fabric onto the site. This harmonious fusion of old and new establishes Ruten Park as a natural center, rooted in local heritage while embracing the city’s forward-looking aspirations.
Iconic Landmark: The Ring
At the heart of Ruten Park lies The Ring, an iconic landmark that symbolizes the city’s identity and connectivity. This floating structure, suspended 5-6 meters above ground, serves as an urban umbrella, sheltering the public space beneath. With integrated lighting, including 110 LED bulbs, The Ring creates a luminous ambiance, defining distinct zones for various activities such as playgrounds, stages, water features, and a skatepark.
Grid of Possibilities
SpaceGroup’s design strategy for Ruten Park revolves around the concept of a “grid of possibilities,” offering a balance between large-scale urban park features and smaller, intimate spaces. This approach allows for a diverse range of activities, catering to both planned events and spontaneous gatherings. The park’s versatility accommodates representative, planned activities, while also encouraging informal and unexpected interactions, ensuring it remains a dynamic hub for community engagement.
A Multifaceted Urban Oasis
Ruten Park represents a multifaceted urban oasis, blending intimacy with openness, specificity with flexibility, and small-scale with large-scale elements. It serves as a testament to the transformative power of public space, offering a welcoming environment for residents and visitors alike to connect, engage, and celebrate the essence of Sandnes’ vibrant community life.
